The Himachal Pradesh government is preparing to monetize its hydropower assets by selling electricity generated from 146 projects, totaling approximately 1,572 megawatts. The government plans to sell this power based on market demand and prices, similar to the stock market. To facilitate this, the government has initiated the process of selecting professional power trading companies.

The energy department has issued e-tenders for electricity marketing and trading. The selected power traders will monitor electricity prices across various markets, exchanges, and states, selling power where better rates are available. The government currently receives free electricity and equity power from a total of 146 hydropower projects, which provide a total of 1,571.95 megawatts of marketable electricity. This includes 1,134.42 megawatts of free electricity and 437.53 megawatts of equity power.

Just as investors in the stock market buy and sell shares at opportune times, electricity prices in the market fluctuate based on seasonal demand, industrial needs, and state requirements. Under the new arrangement, the power trading company will keep an eye on market trends and aim to generate higher revenue for the government by selling electricity during peak demand periods. Additionally, they will manage electricity scheduling and trading processes.

The government does not intend to limit itself to hydropower in the future. Therefore, this initiative will also explore the marketing potential of electricity generated from solar energy, wind energy, battery storage, and other renewable sources. Officials from the energy directorate believe that if this market-based model proves successful, Himachal Pradesh could generate significantly more revenue from its electricity assets.
