State Bureau, Shimla: In the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF-2025), the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi has made significant strides, while Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) and Sardar Patel University (SPU) have failed to secure a position in the top 100. Additionally, several medical and dental colleges from Himachal Pradesh were also unable to achieve a ranking.
IIT Mandi has improved its overall ranking, and Shoolini University in Solan has successfully registered its name in this year’s rankings as well.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan released the NIRF 2025 rankings on Thursday. The rankings were published across 17 categories, including overall university, college, research institution, and engineering. The NIRF rankings assist students in selecting the best colleges in the country.

Institutions Not Ranked
Himachal Pradesh did not secure any positions in the Top 50 Public Universities, Top 3 Open Universities, and Top 3 Skill Universities categories. Furthermore, it failed to make the Top 100 Colleges, Top 50 Research Colleges, Top 10 Innovation, and Top 10 SDG categories. The state also did not rank in the Top 50 Medical and Top 40 Dental categories.
Tenth Edition of the NIRF Ranking
This is the tenth edition of the National Institutional Ranking Framework. Over the past few years, the NIRF has published rankings across 17 categories, following a registration process. This year, 14,163 colleges registered for the ranking.
HPU and SPU Drop Out of Top 100
The state government is taking strict measures to improve quality in education. Several new programs have been initiated to enhance educational standards, which have shown better results in school education. However, there has been no improvement in higher education. Himachal Pradesh University in Shimla and Sardar Patel University in Mandi did not secure any position in the top 100 rankings.
Both institutions are public universities, with Himachal Pradesh University being the oldest in the state. It was also outside the top 100 in the previous ranking, raising concerns about the quality of education in the public sector. Himachal Pradesh has six medical colleges and two medical universities, along with five dental colleges.
