Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a rise in violent crimes, with a total of 2,091 cases reported in 2024. Comparatively, the state’s violent crime rate remains lower than that of several larger states. According to national statistics, the number of violent crimes recorded in the state was 1,858 in 2022 and slightly increased to 1,869 in 2023.
In 2024, the estimated population of Himachal Pradesh was 7.52 million, resulting in a violent crime rate of 27.8 per million population. In contrast, the national average for violent crime stands at 52.9 per million. The charge-sheeting rate for violent crimes in Himachal Pradesh was reported at 74.7%, indicating that the majority of cases resulted in police investigations being completed and charges filed in court. For comparison, charge-sheeting rates in other states were 83.0% in Bihar, 68.8% in Maharashtra, 65.1% in Madhya Pradesh, and 71.6% in Telangana.
Despite the relatively lower crime rate, the continuous increase in violent crime in the state is concerning. The report also indicates that 84 murder cases were recorded in Himachal Pradesh in 2024.
On a national scale, violent crimes in India totaled 434,108 in 2022, increased to 434,987 in 2023, and surged to 742,645 in 2024. Bihar has reported the highest number of violent crimes over these three years, with 49,610 cases in 2022, 52,165 in 2023, and 107,303 in 2024. Other states with significant numbers of violent crimes in 2024 include:

- Uttar Pradesh: 85,647 cases
- Odisha: 75,403 cases
- Madhya Pradesh: 57,298 cases
- West Bengal: 51,244 cases
Conversely, states with the lowest recorded cases in 2024 were Nagaland (125), Sikkim (150), Mizoram (232), Meghalaya (497), Arunachal Pradesh (508), and Goa (607).
